Specialist Sports Clinic

Our specialist Sports Clinic is led by experienced osteopath and Clinic Tutor Simon Tolson. Mr Tolson has been the ESO’s Sports Osteopathy Course Leader for over 20 years and is also a member of our International teaching faculty. He has a background in several sports, Athletics, Trampolining, Skiing and Swimming, and has first-hand experience of competing, in Pole Vault and Triathlon.  He has coached to National Level and is currently an Athletics coach with Blackheath & Bromley Harriers.  As well as having 26+ years experience in osteopathic practice, Mr Tolson holds a diploma in Sports Psychology and has studied a range of complementary healthcare approaches, which also inform his recommendations for injury rehabilitation.

The Sports Clinic is staffed by final year students who have a keen interest in the subject.  It offers individual, holistic advice and treatment for amateur and professional sportspeople. Practitioners investigate the cause of the injury, assess the individual’s training methods and tailor advice and rehabilitation to the patient and their sport; the Sports Clinic team, and their patients, also have exclusive access to the Clinic’s rehabilitation room. As well as injury treatment and prevention, the team looks to aid performance through: increased awareness; improved strength and flexibility; a focused mindset.

At the ESO Clinic we treat people of all abilities, from weekend sports enthusiasts to international athletes – we asked Peter Davey, Kent Senior Male Athlete of the Year and 2017 Masters World Triple Jump Champion, why he chose the ESO – you can read his response here.

Sports Osteopathy

Osteopathy has increasingly been playing an important role in the medical teams for many sports clubs and associations; more and more sports people are consulting osteopaths to aid performance, help with injury prevention and as part of rehabilitation after suffering an injury.

An osteopath will use a wide range of techniques in the treatment of minor sports injuries with the ability to treat many varied conditions. At the ESO, student practitioners carry out the treatments under the close supervision of a highly qualified osteopath with extensive experience in the field of sports medicine. As well as this, we have the facility to directly refer to our onsite Musculo-skeletal Diagnostic Ultrasound Clinic, headed by our Consultant Imaging Specialist, to further aid our diagnosis and treatment plan if needed.

What Can Osteopathy Treat?

Osteopathy can help many problems suffered by both amateur and professional sports people. Examples of these include:

    • Muscle strain
    • Back pain (not arising from accident or injury)
    • Knee and hip pain
    • Minor ankle injuries
    • Frozen shoulder and elbow pain
    • General reduction in flexibility and movement

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a vital element of the ESO Sports Clinic. Recovery time obviously depends on the nature and severity of the sports injury and the structures affected, be it bone, muscle, ligament or tendon. Often, keen athletes return to their chosen sport far too early, with the potential risk of further more serious injury. An osteopath can provide professional advice to help ensure a controlled and measured return to fitness, thus reducing these risks.

Rehabilitation may involve the use of strapping and the prescription of stretching and resistance exercises, according to the nature of the injury. Part of the overall management includes relaxation techniques, and advice on contrast bathing (hot and cold), anti-inflammatory drugs, nutrition, and the motivation to regain full fitness. Communication with a coach or team manager is encouraged throughout the recovery period.

Why Choose the ESO Clinic?

The ESO Clinic has been providing osteopathic treatment for over 40 years with consistently high quality of clinical care well known across the area. Students, under supervision of experienced tutors, carry out over 20,000 treatments a year, which bears testimony to this. We have 21 treatment rooms, a large free car park and can offer same day appointments.

As a registered charity and teaching clinic, the ESO clinic offers very competitive pricing for treatments. With its long history in Maidstone, the ESO has made many contacts and relationships with some sports clubs and institutions leading to a further discount. Please ask at reception when booking your appointment.
