One of the school’s strengths is the wonderful clinic facility it offers students and the local community. 3rd and 4th year students work here to gain their all important clinical training. The clinic:
- is located in Maidstone town centre to ensure maximum convenience for our patients and students;
- has 23 treatment rooms and carries out around 18,000 treatments a year;
- is manned by 3rd and 4th year students each week-day for daytime and evening appointments;
- houses two large classrooms and a newly built student commonroom where students may relax or study. It is set in 17 acres of parkland in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Clinical training is a pivotal part of an osteopathic student's studies.
Duringtheir time at the ESO, students are encouraged to develop skills of evaluation, reasoning, analysis and diagnosis. In addition
to this, clinical training aids students in the development of practitionership and professional skills.The Integrated Masters in Osteopathy degree provides students with gradual exposure to the clinic and clinical environment. Each student is required to
complete 1,000 hours in the clinic (split between treating and observing), which includes an anticipated minimum of 50 new patient consultations. All treatments in clinic are carried out under the supervision of a clinic tutor, who will be an experienced practising osteopath.
The teaching clinic is open to the general public throughout the year and prospective students should therefore be aware that there is a requirement to attend clinic during academic holiday times. Students see a broad variety of patients in the clinic, from all social backgrounds, ages and occupations, and from a wide geographical area. As well as the general outpatients’ clinic, the ESO offers a variety of specialist clinics that allow students to gain a range of experience with varying patient groups and conditions. These include:
- Maternity Clinic
- Children's Clinic
- Sports Injury Clinic
- General Clinic
- Diagnostic Ultrasound Clinic
The ESO also offers a satellite charitable clinic that helps to integrate osteopathy into the community, providing access to osteopathic treatment for those for whom it might not otherwise be available.
