  Entry Requirements

It is important to realise that qualifications alone do not guarantee acceptance onto the course.  Please refer to the 'How to Apply' page for further selection criteria.

UK Students

The ESO considers applications from students with a broad range of qualifications including A-Levels, AS Levels, Scottish Highers and Advanced, Irish Leaving Certificates, Vocational and Access courses.

School leavers are typically required to obtain the following:

Two students

GCSEs

5 x GCSEs including grade C in English and Maths

GCEs (A Levels)

3 x good passes at A Level (typically BCC), which must include:

  • GCE A Level Biology or Human Biology
  • At least one other science, ideally Chemistry (although we also accept Physics, Physical Education or Mathematics as the second science)
  • A third GCE A Level qualification at Grade C or above (excluding General Studies) OR an equivalent qualification.

BTEC

Typical grade requirement: DMM at level 3.  Must be Health, Science or Sports related and relevant science units should be taken.  We may ask applicants to take our Summer Science Course if the chosen units do not meet our requirements.

If you would like to discuss the suitability of your qualification please contact our Admissions Department: +44 (0)1622 671558.

Key Skills

The Key Skills qualification will be welcomed as an appropriate element within, or in addition to, the applicant's profile, although this will not be a prerequisite for entry to the School's degree programme.

ALL applicants will need good literacy skills

International Students

A range of international qualifications such as the Certificat d’Enseignement Secondaire Superieur, Abitur, Maturitatszeugnis, Scientific Baccalaureate  or equivalent are acceptable.    We will look for evidence of higher marks in relevant science subjects (i.e. Biology/Chemistry/Physics). Our Admissions Department can provide advice on the suitability of specific qualifications not listed here.

International students must be fluent in both spoken and written English. Holders of formal qualification in the English language may be given preference.  The standard required is a minimum score of 6.5 in the International English Language Test (Academic) (IELTS) OR Grade C in the Cambridge Proficiency Examination (CPE).   Contact your local British Council for information about courses leading to these qualifications.

Mature Applicants

We welcome mature applicants and understand that they may not have current or standard qualifications. Many mature students at the ESO come from a massage or other health related background.  We accept a number of associated qualifications, provided that they are at an appropriate level.  We treat each application on its own merits and will take relevent life experience into consideration.

Holders of the following qualifications are welcomed:

  •   Access Courses offered by LEAs

These must be science/health related - please contact our Admissions Department for guidance

  •   Open University

Recommendations: Human Biology (SK277) or Molecular and Cell Biology (S377) Level 3

  •   City of Westminster College's

                Preparation for Alternative Medicine Course

Mature applicants may also qualify for the ESO's Summer Science Course

Applicants with existing degrees are also welcome to apply, although, if the degree is non-sciences related, we may ask the applicant to take our Summer Science Course OR request the applicant does some appropriate background reading. This will be discussed at interview.
