  Entry Requirements

 

The ESO seeks to attract applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds who are committed to studying osteopathy having thoroughly researched the subject.  Our normal requirements for entry are skills in, and knowledge of, the basic sciences. However, each application is assessed on a broad range of criteria, which includes the personal statement and referee's report as well as past and predicted academic performance.  Please refer to the 'How to apply' section for further information.

The qualifications we commonly accept are shown below.  The list is not exhaustive and candidates are encouraged to contact the ESO Admissions Department for advice about the suitability of qualifications not listed here.

UK STUDENTS

School Leavers

The following are intended to provide a guide to offer levels:

GCSE

5 x GCSEs including a minimum grade C in English, Maths and Science.

GCE A-Levels

Grades BCC from 3 x A-levels to include 2 science subjects (we accept Biology, Chemistry, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Mathematics, Sport Science).  General Studies is not accepted.

BTEC National / Advanced Diplomas

Grades: DMM - Must be Health, Science or Sports related and include relevant science units.  We may ask applicants to attend our Summer Science Course if the chosen BTEC units do not have sufficient science content to meet the course requirements.

Scottish Highers

280 UCAS points overall to include 2 science subjects grades BB at Higher Level.

Welsh Baccalaureate

280 UCAS points overall to include 2 A-levels grades BC in science subjects (as above).

International Baccalaureate

Acceptable with a minimum overall score of 26 points to include 5 points in 2 science subjects.

Cambridge Pre-U

We welcome Cambridge International Pre-U Certificates (Principal Subjects) as an alternative to A-levels.  The School also accepts the Cambridge International Pre-U Diploma as meeting general entry requirements.  Applicants will be required to offer a minimum of two science-based subjects at A-level or its equivalent.

Mature Applicants

A significant number of our students are mature and do not have current or standard qualifications.  We treat each application on its own merits and relevant professional qualifications and life experience will be taken into consideration.  For example, many mature students at the ESO come from a massage or other health related background.  We accept a number of associated qualifications, provided that they are at an appropriate level.  There are a range of routes you can take to qualify for entry, some of these are listed below.

Access Diploma

Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas.  These must be science/health related and applicants will need a minimum of 12 credits at Level 3 in science based subjects at merit or above.  If GCSE Maths/English is below grade C then 12 credits at Level 2 in each subject will be expected.

Open University

Open University recommendations: Human Biology (SK277) or Molecular and Cell Biology (S377) Level 3 or Human Genetics and Health Issues (SK195).

ESO Summer Science Course

If you have not studied science before, but have other qualifications that are equivalent to A-level (or above), you may qualify for entry by attending the ESO's re-orientation programme: the Summer Science Course (SSC). 

 

EU / INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

At the ESO we pride ourselves on the diversity of our students' backgrounds.  Each year approximately 50% of our students apply from outside of the UK.  We have listed below some of the qualifications that overseas applicants have applied with and typical offers we have made:

Irish Leaving Certificate

Pass with BBBBB at Higher Level to include 2 science subjects.

French Baccalaureate

Pass Scientific Version with 12 points

Certificat d'Enseignment Secondaire Superieur

Pass with 65%

German Abitur

Overall result of 2.5

Italian Diploma di Marturita or di Esame di Stato

Pass Diploma with 90/100

European Baccalaureate

Pass with overall result 70%

 

English Language Requirement

All applicants must be fluent in both spoken and written English.  For applicants whose first language is not English, the ESO's minimum English language proficiency level is an overall score of 6.5 in the International English Language Test (IELTS) or equivalent. Contact the local British Council in your country for information about suitable courses leading to recognised English language qualifications.
